A wrong guess doesn't just cost the rung you're on — it skips the next clue entirely. Guess wrong on the 5-point clue and your best remaining outcome is 3 points; wrong at 3 and you're staring at the 1-point giveaway. So a guess doesn't risk one rung of value, it risks the current rung and the information of the next. Price that in before you type.
Why two-to-one? Compare guessing at 5 points versus skipping to a near-certain 4: the guess only wins that trade if it lands clearly more often than it burns. Confidence that's merely "maybe" is exactly what the ladder is designed to punish.

The practical read: the biggest information jump is from clue 1 to clue 2. If clue 1 gives you nothing, one skip is almost always right. After clue 2, waiting gets expensive — the later rungs confirm what you already suspect while the points drain away.
Before guessing, say your answer against every revealed clue, out loud if you can. A right answer clicks against all of them — Rung clues are written so that near-misses fail on at least one rung. If your candidate needs a shrug to fit clue 1, it's the wrong candidate.
