Clues are worth 5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1 points, top to bottom.
Guess right: bank the current points. Done for the day.
Guess wrong: the clue burns and you fall two rungs.
Skip: fall one rung, nothing burns.
Reach the bottom with no correct guess and the ladder wins.
A worked example
Say the hidden answer is ECHO (not a real Rung puzzle — no spoilers here). The ladder might read:

Pure riddle. A confident player smells it already — 5 points if they're right, a two-rung fall if they're wrong.

Category narrows. If you suspected ECHO, this is where nerve pays.

Most players are now sure. 3 points is the honest middle.
